About This Album

Album Notes

My music arises out of real-life circumstances. It is authentic and engaging.
I Can Fly came to me early on in life in response to feeling abandoned.
Sunflower was a poem written for me by my poet and musician friend Danny Johnson from Canada.
They Always Say originated from a relationship with an older man when I was in high school, and repeated itself many times through the years.
All the Clowns addresses my vulnerability in believing what I am told in relationships even when all the evidence contradicts those words.
Wishing You Release was written for my friend on death row, Jarvis Jay Masters.
I Am the One has meaning on at least two distinct levels.
Forever was written in response to then 4-year-old Jackson who asked, "We're all going to die, aren't we?"
Ashes is about love and life and continuing on.
Breathe arouse from trying to figure out why I was physically falling and how I could stay on my feet.
Get a New Program. Sometimes I have had to replace a deep rut in my mind which no longer matched up with the reality of a situation
He's Gone. Gary, my husband and best friend of 39 years died October 21, 2014.
Quick Light a Candle was written and submitted for a Spiritual Direction and the Cosmos Conference. They did not accept my offering.

1) I Can Fly

Chorus:
I can fly on my own
With the breeze holding up my wings
I can fly on my own
I can take whatever time brings

I’m not too young to fly
I’ve been around long enough to know
You can’t depend on anyone
I don’t have a broken wing
I have what it takes to make my life complete and set me free {chorus}

My wings are strong and sure
I needn’t doubt myself
Or hesitate to try them out
There’s only one way to fly
It’s open true and fee never worry what they think about
{chorus}

The sky is vast and blue
But I can only fall into
Another part of heaven’s mind
My eyes set on the sun
Let warmth and light come streaming through into life’s day {chorus}

Tag:
Let the breeze carry me home

2) Sunflower

You are my high sunflower
Radiant like the sun
Your love thaws the cold fever of my heart
And though you would dwell in the sun
You lean down to touch my despair
Your sweet green leaves embrace me
Lift me up
We rejoice
And sing once again

3) They Always Say

They always say they’ll give you everything
They don’t say until morning
Flowers and jewels
Lingerie and chocolate
All that’s perceived your desire

Chorus:
You’re beautiful and I love you
I want you, I need you
I can’t live without you

Dinner and dancing
Wine and romancing
Your place or my place my dear
Responding in kind
I surrendered my mind
Blindly believed empty words {chorus}

The phone doesn’t ring
My calls not returned
All hopes and dreams drown in tears
Count yourself blessed
To love none the less
Bravely continuing on {chorus}

Tag:
They always say they’ll give you everything
They don’t say until morning
They just don’t say until morning
They just don’t say until morning

4) All the Clowns

Chorus:
All the clowns in heaven must be laughing at me
Or the rain would be pouring down
All the clowns in heaven must be laughing at me
Or the rain would be pouring down

I love women I don’t make commitments
No responsibilities for me
Tell me only of pleasure not of heartache
Life is far too short to dwell in pain
Can I trust you, trust you, trust you
{chorus}

Low self esteem that must be your problem
No one else can have what we have here
You know that I will love you forever
What more could you think to ask of me
Can I trust you, trust you, trust you
{chorus}

Tag:
I trusted you, I believed in you
All the clowns in heaven must be laughing at me
Be laughing at me

5) Wishing You Release

Wishing you release
No obstacles to freedom

6) I Am the One ~ solo by Kamala

Chorus:
I am the one you’ll hope for
I am the one you’ll long for
I am the one you’ll search for
Through all of time

I am the one you’ll go looking for
I am the one you’ll probe eyes you meet for
I am the one you’ll anticipate with each piece of mail {chorus}

I am the one you’ll dream of
I am the one who’ll arouse you
I am the one you’ll reach for in the night {chorus}

I am the one you’ll go to the stars for
I am the one you’ll wander the heavens for
I am the one you’ll wish for on each falling star {chorus}

I am the one who’ll haunt you
I am the one surrounding you
I am the one elusive forevermore
I am the one

7) Forever

You asked if we will all die
Born we’ll die I reply
There’s a part never born
Will not die
You may remember

8) Ashes

Chorus:
All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail has turned to ashes

Let the night sky hold you
Let the night sky cover you
Let the night sky comfort you
Let the night sky form your vision
{chorus}

Let the river cleanse you
Let the river moisten you
Let the river nourish you
Let the river create you

All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail has turned to ashes
All the hot mail… fuel for becoming

Let the sun warm you
Let the sun nudge you
Let the sun move you
Let the sun give you life

9) Breathe ~ solos by: Jane, Kamala, Christina, Jeri

Chorus:
Let the earth hold you up
Let the sky hold you down
Let the air embrace you
Let the breeze caress you
Let your body breathe

One foot, other foot, one foot, other foot
One foot, other foot, breathe {repeat}

Feet feel the ground… {chorus}

Look, lift, step…

Let go fear… {chorus}

Tag:
Into the moment, into the moment
Into the moment, into the moment and breathe {repeat}

10) Get a New Program ~ solo by Kamala

Woke in the night torturing myself over him
What went wrong, what did I do
Please never leave me, I need you to need myself
I’ll love you forever and a day

Chorus:
Get a new program girl, get a new program girl
Get a new program girl before you drive yourself insane

Now things have changed, all that he does says goodbye
Can’t be there, he says we’re friends
He loves only her, his commitment it is to her
Her beauty, serene, entrances him {chorus}

Woke to the day, somehow broke his spell over me
Soul reclaimed, vital alive
Follow the drum beat, the pulse of my heart that flies
Catch the dream, true ever to myself

Got a new program now, got a new program now
Got a new program, no more driving myself insane {repeat to fade}

11) He's Gone ~ solo by Kamala

He’s gone and he won’t be back
He’s gone and he won’t be back
He’s gone, he’s free
And he won’t be back
The deer look at me
The deer look at me
You were there, you saw him fly away

12) Quick Light a Candle

Quick, light a candle, before you get lost in the dark
Quick, light a candle, before you get lost in the dark
Quick, let go, one
Quick, let go, one
Let go, one

Quick, clang a symbol, before you are dazed by the stars
Quick, clang a symbol, before you are dazed by the stars
Quick, let go, one
Quick, let go, one
Let go, one

My gratitude to: Jane, Jeri, Christina and Sigrid, all of whom contributed their voices and ideas for making these songs what they are; Fran Fanelli, the regular accompanist for The Pratt Avenue Singers, for being willing to accompany a group with no leader, and/or five leaders, changing keys on a moment’s notice and making us what we are today; Jacob for patiently facilitating the recording of this CD; The First Presbyterian Church of St. Helena, California for allowing us to use their space; Maria, who agreed to give me voice lessons, understood my songs, collaborated with me to improve them and arranged, directed and produced them. This CD could not have been made without her. I am deeply grateful.
